THE VOCAL AUDIT.

Listen to each example. Mark the problems you hear in your own tracks. Get a real diagnosis in 10 minutes — not a sales pitch.

01

LOUDNESS

LISTEN A — QUIET MIX
Hear the issue
QUIET MIX
MASTERED

Your track is way quieter than commercial releases. Listeners reach for the volume knob — and never come back.

My track has this problem

"Why does my song sound quiet compared to Spotify?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• No mastering chain

• Limiter not pushed enough

• No multi-band compression

THE FIX

Proper mastering chain with limiter + multi-band comp at the right LUFS target.

02

BOXINESS

LISTEN A — BOXY
Hear the issue
BOXY
OPEN

Honky, congested low-mids. Vocals sound like they're recorded inside a cardboard box.

My track has this problem

"Why do my vocals sound like they're inside a tube?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• Untreated room reflections (small bedrooms especially)

• Buildup around 300–500 Hz from mic proximity

• Mic placed too close to walls or hard surfaces

THE FIX

Surgical EQ cut around 300–500 Hz on the vocal chain — kills the boxiness without thinning the voice.

03

MUD

LISTEN A — MUDDY
Hear the issue
MUDDY
CLEAR

The vocal disappears in the beat. Low frequencies pile up and the mix loses clarity.

My track has this problem

"Why do my vocals get swallowed by the beat?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• No high-pass filter on the vocal

• Frequency clash with the beat in the 100–250 Hz range

• No carving space for the vocal in the mix

THE FIX

High-pass at 80–100 Hz, then carve a small dip in the beat where the vocal sits — instant clarity.

04

SIBILANCE

LISTEN A — HARSH
Hear the issue
HARSH
SMOOTH

Harsh S and T sounds that stab your ears. A common issue with bright condenser mics.

My track has this problem

"Why do my S sounds feel like they're cutting through my ears?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• Bright condenser mic with hyped 5–10 kHz range

• No de-esser on the chain

• Aggressive high-shelf boost during mixing

THE FIX

A de-esser tuned to your voice (typically 6–8 kHz) — tames the harshness without making your vocal sound dull.

05

PLOSIVES

LISTEN A — POPS
Hear the issue
POPS
CLEAN

Pops on B and P sounds that punch through the mix. Bad mic placement, no pop filter.

My track has this problem

"Why do my B's and P's sound like little explosions?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• No pop filter between you and the mic

• Mic placed directly in front of your mouth, not slightly off-axis

• Recording too close to the mic capsule

THE FIX

Pop filter + 30° off-axis mic placement during recording. For takes already done: a steep high-pass at 80 Hz on the plosive moments.

06

INCONSISTENT VOLUME

LISTEN A — UNEVEN
Hear the issue
UNEVEN
LEVEL

Some words jump out, others get buried. The vocal feels uneven across the song.

My track has this problem

"Why do some words explode and others disappear?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• Inconsistent mic distance during recording

• No compression or compressor settings too gentle

• No volume automation on louder/quieter sections

THE FIX

Two-stage compression: a fast compressor for word-level peaks, then a slower one for overall consistency. Combined with manual gain rides on the loud spots.

07

NO GLUE

LISTEN A — DETACHED
Hear the issue
DETACHED
GLUED

The vocal floats on top of the beat instead of sitting in it. They feel like two separate things, not one song.

My track has this problem

"Why does my song sound like vocals on top of a beat — instead of one finished song?"

WHERE IT COMES FROM

• No reverb or delay tying the vocal to the beat's space

• No bus compression on the master to fuse the elements

• Vocal and beat sit at different perceived loudness levels

THE FIX

A short reverb send + master bus compressor (2:1 ratio, slow attack) — pulls the vocal into the same space as the beat. This is what makes a song sound finished.
