MUD
The vocal disappears in the beat. Low frequencies pile up and the mix loses clarity.

SIBILANCE
Harsh S and T sounds that stab your ears. A common issue with bright condenser mics.

Pops on B and P sounds that punch through the mix. Bad mic placement, no pop filter.

• No pop filter between you and the mic
• Mic placed directly in front of your mouth, not slightly off-axis
• Recording too close to the mic capsule
THE FIX
Pop filter + 30° off-axis mic placement during recording. For takes already done: a steep high-pass at 80 Hz on the plosive moments.

INCONSISTENT VOLUME
Some words jump out, others get buried. The vocal feels uneven across the song.

• Inconsistent mic distance during recording
• No compression or compressor settings too gentle
• No volume automation on louder/quieter sections
THE FIX
Two-stage compression: a fast compressor for word-level peaks, then a slower one for overall consistency. Combined with manual gain rides on the loud spots.

NO GLUE
The vocal floats on top of the beat instead of sitting in it. They feel like two separate things, not one song.
"Why does my song sound like vocals on top of a beat — instead of one finished song?"
WHERE IT COMES FROM
• No reverb or delay tying the vocal to the beat's space
• No bus compression on the master to fuse the elements
• Vocal and beat sit at different perceived loudness levels
THE FIX
A short reverb send + master bus compressor (2:1 ratio, slow attack) — pulls the vocal into the same space as the beat. This is what makes a song sound finished.
